DIABETES AND DIABETES SYMPTOMS
Let us begin with the basics of diabetes. When you eat food, and it gets digested by your stomach, the carbohydrates (also called sugars and starches) break down into another kind of sugar. This is called glucose. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas in your body, helps this glucose to enter the bloodstream and penetrate the cells. It is how we get energy. It is how your body gets fueled. But, due to several conditions, the glucose cannot enter the cells and establishes in the blood. It does so because the pancreas stops producing insulin or produces insulin in a small amount (not enough to allow glucose to enter the cells), or the insulin it produces is not so effective. When glucose starts building up in the blood, the blood sugar level goes up, and high blood sugar occurs.
This disease is divided into many types. Some of them are explained below.
- Type 1: This occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin. The cells in the pancreas get attacked by your immune system. Small children and young adults mainly fall prey to Type 1. People suffering from this type inject insulin every day to function.
- Type 2: It is the most common type of the mentioned disease. It occurs when the pancreas produces insulin but maybe not in the adequate amount of insulin that is no more effective. It occurs in middle-aged people and older ones.
- Gestational: This type of disease is found in women who are pregnant. In most cases, this disease goes away after the baby is out. But, it is always important to keep in mind that if a person is suffering from this disease, she might later develop type 2.
- Monogenic: This disease is rare. It occurs when changes take place in a single gene. This disease generally develops in the adolescent period and early phase of adulthood. Monogenic is divided into two more forms. They are neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) and maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). NDM is a rare disease that occurs in infants. It develops in only one infant out of 90,000 live births. This disease develops in infants six months from birth or a year. It is a genetic mutation. It is divided into transient and permanent. Urging to frequently pass urine, thirsty most of the time, dehydration, etc are some symptoms of this disease. MODY begins before a person attains the age of 30. It is defined as an abnormal increase in the blood sugar level. It develops due to alterations in many genes. Such a disease runs strongly in families. Recurrent skin infections, repeated yeast infections, urge to urinate frequently, dehydration, blurry vision, etc are some symptoms of MODY.
- Latent Autoimmune diabetes in Adults (LADA): This disease occurs when the pancreas stops producing the required amount of insulin, a hormone, that helps glucose enter our body cells and provide us with energy. LADA damages the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. People above 30 years of age suffer from this disease. There is a necessity for insulin for at least six months after diagnosis. It is the key criterion of LADA management.
There are different symptoms of diabetes. Some of them appear very early, and some show slow progress. Several diabetes symptoms take less time and show up within a week or weeks. The ones that take much time to appear might take a year or so. Sometimes, a person might suffer from high blood sugar without any symptoms. Well! This condition is a bit problematic because without the symptoms it is hard to understand and diagnose an issue. When proper treatment is absent, the condition becomes critical. Let us now understand the diabetes symptoms.
- Increased thirst and urination: When a person carries high sugar levels in the blood, he or she frequently gets the feeling of passing urine from the body. They use washrooms repeatedly. People also require plenty of water during the suffering phase. He or she always has the urge to drink water frequently. They become thirsty more than before.
- Increased hunger: It is one of the diabetes symptoms. A person should maintain a healthy diet when he or she gets high blood sugar levels. There is an increased level of hunger and cravings for different food items in people who have the disease. According to several nutritionists, dieticians, and other specialists related to this field of study, a person should first try to recognize real hunger and not run after cravings, which are sudden by nature. They say that if a person is hungry, he or she will opt for more healthy food items. They say distraction is essential to help you stay away from food cravings, such as listening to birds chirping outside, going for a walk, or a jog, talking to your friend, etc. Specialists also add that a person should get enough sleep. Because those who do not sleep enough suffer from food cravings more.
- Fatigue: When a person suffers from diabetes in the body, tiredness surrounds him or her. They look exhausted with no strength to walk, talk, and operate other activities with energy. Fatigue is one of the common diabetes symptoms. It affects a person in many ways. Other symptoms connected to this sign are difficulty learning things, mood swings, slow responses, headaches, lack of motivation, gastrointestinal issues, etc. Specialists from this arena admit that fatigue is prevented by eating healthy food even if you don’t feel like having it; he or she should control weight, have enough sleep, and stop consuming alcohol, and other such items, etc.
- Blurred Vision: It is a condition when a person cannot view things clearly and witnesses blurry images. It feels as if you have a net-like or a filter-like element on your eyes that prevents you from focusing. Blurred vision might show you up with intense and sharp headaches, difficulty speaking, loss of muscle control, etc.
Conclusion:
It does not matter what type of diabetes you have. It is a disease that needs immediate medical attention. This disease harms a person in many ways and affects day-to-day activities in numerous ways. If you have noticed any diabetes symptoms, kindly look for a doctor or a specialist to help you treat your concern at the earliest possible. Do not let this disease get hold of you.
